80s Walk & Roll Club for 5th to 8th graders

What: This club is equal parts choose-your-own-adventure, shop class, engineering, video production and Biker’s Ed.
When: January 9 2023 – June 9 2023, Mondays and Fridays from 3:30-5:30pm
Participation is 1-2 days a week considering the student’s other commitments.
Summer Club will continue June-Aug 2023 (details TBD)
Where: meet in Hood River Middle School classroom, explore around campus and within 1 mile of school by foot or bike
Cost: FREE; students can bring their own bikes or use one + helmet supplied by the school
Weather: our plans will be flexible based on Mother Nature, but generally we will adopt the “no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing” attitude. If a student needs a warm and waterproof jacket or boots, please let us know. If it’s cold and rainy, we’ll find something fun to do inside.

Choose-Your-Own-Adventure
Students will have fun taking walks (skateboarding optional) or bike rides to their favorite places around Hood River with a musical soundtrack of their own choosing. They will help plan the route, ride or walk to the destination and receive a treat or gift card from local businesses they visit. Along the way, we will learn the laws and etiquette for walking and biking and how to navigate or avoid tricky intersections. They will also learn to have a sense of direction and the safest routes for getting around town. We will map out their home, the school, friend’s houses and major landmarks.

Shop Class
Students will learn about basic bike parts and how to diagnose mechanical problems.
Engineering
Leading up to the exciting project of installing a demonstration project of protected bikeways and painting crosswalks around the school in July of 2023, students will have the opportunity to review the design for how they use the streets plus design the artistic crosswalks that will be painted in July 2023.

Video Production
Students will make fun, short videos of their experiences exploring the town by foot or bike, interview each other and document how people use the demonstration project when it’s installed.

Biker’s Ed
The club will culminate in a biking exam of their knowledge of traffic law and etiquette. If they pass, they will be deemed ready to safely and independently bike around town and earn a certificate.
