Puncturevine Pull – Volunteer Event

Hood River Soil and Water Conservation District is partnering with The City of Hood River to plan 4 puncturevine pulling events along the Hood River waterfront in July.

Puncturevine, also known as goathead, is a noxious weed that has made its way into Hood River County. It can be found in sunny, dry, rocky locations such as roadsides or gravel parking lots. This summer annual forms a dense mat with very, sharp, spiny seed heads and an extensive root system. The seeds spread easily when they become embedded in footwear and vehicle tires. They are extremely sharp and cause damage by easily puncturing bike tires, inflatable rafts, or dog paws.
Volunteer opportunities:Thursday July 13th; Saturday July 15th; Thursday July 20th; and Saturday July 22nd. The event will run from 9am until 11pm each day. Coffee and donuts will be available at 8:30am.
During this event, volunteers will identify and pull puncturevine growing along the Hood River Waterfront. The hope is to remove it before the seeds can spread any further. Unfortunately, Hood River County does not have the capacity to address all known infestations of this weed, so we must work together to make a difference.
